Nancy Mitchell

“I believe I see the world differently than a non-artist, with brighter, sharper shapes and colors. Therefore, I want to share my vision with the public through my art.

I am drawn to everyday objects or scenes with strong shadows and high-contrast colors. I am interested in painting birds and animals because of their likeness to the human expressions of people I know. I am a multi-media artist who gravitates toward painting and contemporary realism. I taught high school art for 30 years. Although I was the “teacher,” the students and I navigated material together, learning from one another. Creating or teaching art keeps me invigorated and complete.

Although I create in pen and ink and watercolor, my main medium is acrylic.

As a way to create depth and texture, I use my own carved patterned stamps on my paintings. I think the subtle patterns bleeding through the paint, entice the viewer to look closer. Most paintings have “bubbles/dots” stamped around my subjects. To me, these bubbles depict the energy of the subject in the surrounding air. You will see a variety of themes in my artwork. I hope viewing my paintings will inspire people to take a second look at the world around them and appreciate their own environment.”
