We are so excited to feature the work of Oxford artist Melanie Munns during the month of April. This collection, titled Pink Fiction, will be featured and available for purchase in our gallery within the Gallery, The Roost.
The reception will be on Saturday, April 7th from 5 to 8 pm.
Pink Fiction confronts the unattainable and unrealistic restraints that women of the past and present feel. Munns uses Midcentury motifs and sugary colors to address gendered expectations. Cats appear often in her work as a sometimes symbol of spinsterhood, and in this case, empowered, ethereal creatures that transcend time and space.
“I primarily use myself and childhood photos as reference material to paint surreal portraiture that capture my feelings of conflict and nostalgia,” Munns says of the collection. “Though there is beauty, sweetness, and sugary colors throughout my work there is also a tone of quietness or dreariness that can be perceived as sadness, strength, or aggression.”
We've previously talked about Munns sculptural work in this entry featuring her sculpture "Cloud Strainer" and the importance of creating tiny shrines for your home or space.
