We usually don’t do many of our own holiday-themed events at OTG. When we have receptions and openings, we like for the focus to be on our wonderful artists rather than a theme. But this year, after reading about many other Day of the Dead celebrations at art galleries and museums across the country, we decided to put our own spin on the traditional holiday.
We see Oxford Treehouse Gallery as not only a venue for artists to share their work, but also as a community space. Day of the Dead, or All Souls Day, is a great opportunity for us to open our space up for a celebration of life. After all, what is art without the human experiences of loss and joy?
Join us on Thursday, November 2nd, 2017 from 6-8 pm for our first Day of the Dead! Our gallery will be open with all of our great artists’ work on display as usual. On the back porch, we’ll have an All Souls Altar on the porch for celebrants to bring their remembrances of loved ones past. In The Roost, our gallery within the gallery, we’ll set up a space for a potluck meal.
Father Joe from St, John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Oxford will give an All Souls Blessing at 6 pm. Followed by a memorial roll call at 7 pm. You can submit the name(s) of loved one(s) for the roll call on this Google Form.
We suggest that you bring your loved one’s favorite dish or a dish that reminds you of them for the potluck.
Here’s a list of suggested items for you to bring for the All Souls Altar:
Photos or images
Favorite items (jewelry, books, art, music, small knick knacks, tchotchkes, etc)
Names, prayers, thoughts, poems, or memories written on folded / rolled papers
Bread and salt
Special thanks to Mike Mossing and many of our other friends who are pitching in to make this event as festive as possible! We hope to see you there!
